What is the point of the upcoming Alcor conference?

It seems to me that the upcoming Alcor conference can't very likely offer more than what's been offered at the last Alcor conference. Why have it? What's really going on with "conferences"?

Here is the line up of speakers and topics. [+]. It looks as if it could be worth attending but as with all conferences and Alcor events, I'm personally tied up in my own business-- especially in October. It makes me wonder what kind of cryonicist can afford to go to these. Students, unemployed people, retired people-- maybe-- certainly not working entrepreneurs like me.

Everything presented at a conference can be presented on the internet. An attempt should have been made to completely convert to the internet. I'm rather shocked that people who ostensibly are interested in living into the far future are NOT doing everything possible to have a conference on the internet.

One would think that we have the capability to go completely electronic by now-- with conferencing software and all of that-- and yet we have to keep in mind that the interent is, in fact, a failure. It's not working to solve problems. It's probably worse than TV as a failure. I'll get into this more later. Suffice it to say that alphabetical order can be imposed on things to turn the situation around. Good government and policy will involve alphabetical order in the future. See the column to the right for an example. The Chinese have no hope of success because their language cannot be alphabetized. Converting chinese to the alphabet system will involve getting rid of those awful characters and using phonemes instead. I'm on that.

What is the point of your asking? You should instead be asking yourself if you will ever get suspended. Did you know your contract with Alcor permits them to NOT suspend you, but bury or cremate you instead, if certain conditions are met? One of them is "deemed impossible". See below:

"If for any reason suspension is deemed impossible by Alcor after accepting the Member's human remains, the human remains will either be returned to the next of kin or disposed of by burial or cremation. Insofar as is possible, this will be done according to the Member's prestated wishes, with the understanding that legal decisions, logistics or good sense may require a different course of action. ..."

Now here's the kicker, Rick. IT WILL BE DEEMED IMPOSSIBLE IF NOBODY IN THE CRYONICS WORLD WILL SHOW UP TO HELP OUT WHEN THEY LEARN WHO IT IS FOR.

It's always a bad idea to make enemies, Rick. Um, I mean Phil. I keep lapsing.

And "KFC"??? Boy now you have made a whole new set of enemies, besides those at Alcor.

Enjoy the ride, while you have it.

Yeah this type of reasoning has been pointed out to me before. Maybe I'll speak to that soon. The idea that Alcor members woulld think that they cannot be critics of their own industry and their own organization for fear non-suspension retaliation is a good topic. Maybe this DOES explain the silence on issues of importance. You could be right. If you are, it's wrong.
